Histories in Christianity in our City

10 Year Project

This collaborative 10-year project will inspire and equip future generations by passing down knowledge, cultivating a sense of legacy, and encourage the next generation of leaders to both learn from the past and shape the future.

Leaders will experience personal and professional growth as they deepen their knowledge of the past and expand their perspective of the Histories of Christianity in our City.

Together we will create a historical and relational transformational community.

Histories of Christianity in our City.

10 Year Project

  • Denver’s population in 1880 is 35,000 and grows to over 250,000 by 1920. With the growth of Denver there is the establishment of new churches and construction of historic worship spaces that form the landscape of faith communities in the city.

Denver is built by an influx of immigrants. There are riots and acts of overt racism in Denver with a dominant presence of the Ku Klux Klan in the city and the Church.

Christian social services meet the needs of the growing city. Denver Rescue Mission, Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, and Children’s Hospital all founded before 1920.

Colorado is the first state to grant women the right to vote. There is both support and opposition to women’s voting rights by leaders in the Church.

Questions of each period in the past:

What was occurring in this time in our city?

What were the influences on Christianity in our city during this time in history?

How did the people following the way of Jesus respond to the those in need and the needs of the city?

How was Jesus reflected or distorted by the Church in our city in this time in history?

What can we learn from this moment in our past to guide us in the present and future?

PROJECT
FAQs

What is the hope for this project?

We see this project as a gift of legacy for future leaders who follow the way of Jesus to increase in clarity and collaboration from the work of listening and learning to the histories of Christianity in our city.

Why is this project important?

We see leaders who follow the way of Jesus in our city sharing a common faith, but lacking a shared narrative of the past and compassionate action in the present.

Why a 10-Year project?

A 10-year project is long enough to foster meaningful transformation in the lives of the leaders who participate and short enough to believe in the influence it could have in our city.

What are the anticipated outcomes of this project?

Through this 10-year project, leaders are invited to experience personal and professional growth as they expand their knowledge and perspectives through relational collaboration.

Examining the diverse histories of Christianity in our city enables leaders from various backgrounds to build meaningful relationships based on mutual understanding, respect, and commitment.

A shared commitment to this project ensures the important historical narratives and diverse cultural expressions of Christianity in our city are not forgotten. This unique experience invites a more inclusive approach to developing leaders in our city.

Leaders who participate in this project will inspire and equip future generations by passing down this knowledge - cultivating a sense of continuity, instilling a strong foundation, and encouraging the next generation of leaders to learn from the past and shape the future.

Who is leading this project?

This project is being led by co-chairs MiDian Holmes, Founder of The Epitome of Black Excellence & Partnership, and Jared Mackey, Executive Director of The Sacred Grace.

The project is being guided by a growing list of advisory and contributing Voices from a diverse group of leaders grounded in their Christian faith.
